Young Gay and bisexual men are six times more likely to attempt suicide than eld

A research paper published in the Journal of Public Health has reported about increased risk of poor mental health among young gay and bisexual men compared to elderly in the group. Research carried out by the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine has found that gay and bisexual men under the age of 26 were six times more likely to commit suicide or self-harm than men in the group who were aged more than 45 years.

Young gay and bisexual men were also found to be twice as likely to be depressed or anxious. The results strengthen the requirement of mental health interventions for those who need them most.

The research paper is considered to be the first one to assess the mental health differences within gay and bisexual men in the UK. In the study, the researchers have used data from the Stonewall Gay and Bisexual Men's Health Survey.

They have analyzed answers of 5,799 gay and bisexual men who were aged 16 and above and living in the UK. Factors like age, ethnicity, income and education were found to be having a great impact on mental health.

After considering these factors, it was found that black gay and bisexual men were twice as likely to be depressed and five times more likely to attempt suicide than the white majority. Men who fell in lower wage bracket were more inclined to be depressed, anxious and attempts suicide.

People with lower-education level were twice likely to experience one of the above mentioned issues than those who degree level education.

Study’s lead author Dr Ford Hickson from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine said, “Mental illness is one of the biggest health challenges facing the world today and can affect people from all walks of life. We know minority groups are at higher risk of poor mental health than the heterosexual majority”.
