Uber as a part of Zero Fatalities campaign offering discounted rides this weekend

For the Nevada Department of Public Safety’s Zero Fatalities campaign, Uber has also joined hands with the department. The campaign aims to promote awareness about safe, alternative transportation options during the July 4 weekend.

The campaign is on from 30 June to 5 July, 2016. As a part of the campaign, Uber will offer discounted ride codes up to $15 and $5 from each ride will be donated to Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD). The participating low enforcement agencies will distribute discount ride cars when they will make routine traffic stops.

The event will start with a new conference to be held in Las Vegas. At the event, speakers will include representatives from the Department of Public Safety, Nevada Highway Patrol, Uber, and MADD Nevada.

Main aim of Uber’s participation in the campaign is to lead to greater awareness on safe and new transportation alternatives to driving impaired and to reduce the accident issues owing to impaired driving crashes.

The association between Uber and MADD dates back to 2014 when they introduced a new technology that help people remain safe on the road over the holidays. Since then, a lot of data has gathered that shows that ride-sharing apps, like Uber, are proving helpful.

If there are safe, reliable, affordable rides available with just a touch of a button then it means that adults will be less likely to drive after drinking. Now, the technology has advanced to such a level to it is not a tough task to plan before hand as to how someone can reach home safely without designating someone not to drink.

In fact, 80% of Uber riders have affirmed that the concept of designated driver has helped them personally to avoid drinking and driving. Lately, Uber has released data on the impact on drunk driving in Atlanta, Georgia.

Since 2012 Uber has witnessed substantial growth and currently has around 583,000 active riders and 19,000 active drivers in the area. The Atlanta Police Department for the study on Uber’s impact on drinking and driving has provided a data set of every DUI arrest that taken place in the span of five years.

It was found that arrest rate has reduced to 32% from 2,243 to 1,535 over that period. There are many factors that affect drunken driving trends in a city and Uber’s designated driving concept is one of the factors that are helping in reducing drunk driving.

Experts said that it is possible to build a future of ‘No More Victims’. The only thing to make sure is to designate a non-drinking driver before going out for a party either take a public transportation or make sure to take Uber.

New Uber users can enter the code ‘4JulyWMich’ and avail a free first ride up to $20. The cost of a free ride starts at $1 base fare and an additional 15 cents per minute, 75 cents per mile and a 1.55 booking fee.

Special emphasis is given on July 4th weekend as in 2012, almost 50% of the crashes involved a drunk driver and it turned out to be one of the deadliest holidays of that year. There are fewer chances for an application to be present in smaller towns, but with time they would be available.
