Auburn School Department, nonprofit clash over ownership of land

An East Auburn-based nonprofit has claimed that it is the rightful owner of a plot of land that is currently in the possession of the Auburn School Department.

The plot in question, which is 30 feet in width and 500 feet in length, is next to the East Auburn Community School. It is in the possession of the school department for years, but the nonprofit claims that it learnt that it is the rightful owner only last summer.

‘Helmet Guy’ energizes Auburn softball games

Auburn Tigers have tens of thousands of passionate fans who pack the arena to its full capacity whenever the team is in action. Mike Cooper is also a passionate fan of the team but he is notably different.

Cooper and his wife have been attending Auburn baseball matches since the mid-1990s, and years ago he received a baseball helmet from the team as a promotional gift. He has been wearing the same helmet since then, earning the nickname ‘Helmet Guy.’

Members of the Auburn Hills Planning Commission will soon review a series of potential zoning changes to guide developments in Auburn’s the Northeast Corner Neighborhood.

Around one and a half decade ago, a master plan was approved for the city’s northeast corner, which is bounded by Dutton Road, Walton Boulevard, Lapeer Road and the City of Rochester Hills. The zoning was created in a way that preserved natural features.

Three juveniles being questioned in connection with Auburn roundhouse fire

Three juveniles are being questioned in connection with a fire that destroyed the old Lehigh Valley Railroad roundhouse in Auburn last Saturday, police confirmed.

The red brick roundhouse, which is located at 140 Clark St., was found fully engulfed in aggressive flames when firefighters arrived there at around 4:05 p.m. on Saturday. The bulk of the flames were put out by 5:45 p.m.

Investigators are trying to determine whether the blaze was the result of an accident or if it was set by someone intentionally. However, they believe that three juveniles could have a role in the fire.

Auburn Sunshine Week starts with seminar on public information laws

Robert Freeman, the executive director of the Committee on Open Government, fielded questions during a public forum at Auburn’s Memorial City Hall on Monday.

Freeman took questions on topics included New York’s Freedom of Information and Public Meetings laws. The seminar was held just in time for the Sunshine Week that celebrates public information practices nationwide.

Fire totally destroys Auburn home

A multi-family home on North Auburn Road was destroyed totally by a wind-driven fire Sunday afternoon but no one was injured, the Auburn Fire Department announced.

Geoff Low, deputy chief with the Auburn Fire Department, said flames were erupting out of almost every door and window of the building when firefighters arrived.

Low added that the fire was driven by wind, which made it more challenging for firefighters to control the flames. He called the situation ‘extremely hot.’

Auburn Tigers made ten runs on fourteen hits and freshman Casey Mize limited Oral Roberts to merely a single run in seven innings as Auburn defeated Oral Roberts 10-1 on Saturday at Plainsman Park. On Sunday, Tigers capped the weekend filled with offense with a season-high 21 hits in an 18-11 victory over the rival team.

Anfernee Grier, an outfielder for the Tigers, and shortstop Cody Nulph accounted for four RBI, while catcher Blake Logan added 3 RBI for the team, which scored 7 runs in the sixth inning to regain the lead.
