Auburn releases first non-conference basketball schedule

Auburn Tigers on Tuesday released their complete non-conference basketball schedule with games they have planned to play against teams of Winthrop and North Alabama.

The Tigers' first four games and potentially a total of five games this season are scheduled to take place against teams that reached the NCAA Tournament last year.

Before the initial part of this season is complete, Auburn's team would have played seven to eight games against non-conference teams that made the Big Dance.

Auburn's Fan Day on Sunday afternoon attracted a record number of fans, particularly fans of head football coach and former player Gus Malzahn.

The Fan Day event, organized at Auburn Arena, attracted as many as 9,500 fans. The long line of fans went around the corner.

It appeared as if every fan was waiting for Malzahn's autograph on different sorts of things of their choice. "Will you sign this?" was most commonly asked question.

Malzahn was always ready to sign different things of his fans, even when some fans asked him to sign something very sturdy, such as a hard hat.

A sharp-witted elderly woman helped Auburn Police in interrupting a burglary in progress and arresting the burglars.

On Wednesday, a 74-year-old woman, the owners of a home on Reginald Street, found a screw driver and an open door. She quickly determined that someone had made an attempt to break into her home.

With the help of other members of her family, she replaced the locks as well as securing windows in her home. Just a few minutes before midnight on the night of same day, she heard some noises coming from the basement of her home.

Auburn ranked one spot behind Samford University

Samford University in Birmingham grabbed the highest-rank among the state's colleges and universities in the recently released Forbes' 2014 list of America's best colleges/universities.

Out of 650 universities nationwide ranked by Forbes, Samford got 203rd rank. Auburn finished one spot lower at No. 204.

Andrew Westmoreland, president of Samford University, said the ranking further affirmed the university's value, affordability as well as academic stature.

Auburn to start preparations for upcoming season on Friday

Auburn Tigers will start preparations for the upcoming season on Friday, with a stretch of seven days of practice in a row, according to Auburn's official website.

As per Auburn's practice schedule, the Tigers will hit the field at 3:10 p. m. on Friday. All of the scheduled practices will be closed for the public.

The school will practice in pads for the first time on the fifth day, August 5, and carry out its first two-a-day practice on August 6. On August 8, players are scheduled to take a day off, and return for another two-a-day session on August 9.

A 46 year old business woman has indicated that she is planning to ride Beylis Comet in the 100-mile Tevis Cup for the first time.

Dawn Tebbs, the Auburn business owner, is planning to try the Tevis Cup for the first time. She always had an interest in the Western States Trail Ride. She will begin her journey at 5:15 a. m. in at Robie Park near Squaw Valley on
9 August, 2014 and is aiming to reach home within 24 hours.

Tebbs said, "Being a mother of four boys isn't challenging enough. I have to set the bar pretty high."
