Bangor preparing to host Second Comic & Toy Convention

Fans of comic books, science fiction and video games will get a great opportunity to explore comics and games of their choice at the second annual Bangor Comic & Toy Convention, which is scheduled to take place this weekend.

Last year, roughly 4,000 people visited the convention and hundreds of them were seen dressed up as their favorite comic or game figures.

Organizers of this year’s Bangor Comic & Toy Con are very excited for this weekend’s gathering. They expect the upcoming event to attract up to five thousand fans.

Hundreds of students, teachers and community members came out to show their support for the Literacy Volunteers of Bangor, a program designed to strengthen non-English people's English skills or to encourage them to take it on as another language.

Dozens of business owners, local shops and restaurants, and several community groups decorated more than three dozen tables with children's books, tea cups, toys and more. Each of the tables had a unique theme based on a children's book.

City officials said the $65 million arena surpassed their expectations by making money. Thus they decided to extend the city’s relationship with the company managing the arena.

More than one hundred people participated in the Opiate & Heroin Forum and Listening Session held at the University of Augusta’s Bangor campus to discuss the growing opiate epidemic and share suggestions on Wednesday.

The session focused on topics like lack of treatment options for individuals struggling with opiate and heroin addiction, financial and other barriers to drug addicts’ ability to recover, and a need for better-than-jail approaches to addiction.

Bangor is all set to host a listening session this Wednesday evening to allow community members touched by opiates or heroin to share their experiences, observations as well as suggestions.

Sponsored by the city, the Opiate and Heroin Forum & Listening Session is scheduled to be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today in Room 124 at Eastport Hall on the UMaine Augusta-Bangor Campus at 128 Texas Avenue.

Country music legend Dolly Parton to perform in Bangor

Country music star Dolly Parton, who recently turned 70, will perform in Bangor for the first time in more than 25 years.

Confirming her first major U.S. and Canadian tour, the country music legend and pop cultural icon said she would perform in nearly five dozen cities, including Bangor.

Dolly’s Bangor performance is schedule to take place at Darling’s Waterfront Pavilion on Saturday, June 18, 2016.

Bangor to spend up to $1 million to improve call center

Bangor to spend up to $1 million to improve call center

Bangor officials have confirmed that the city has decided to spend up to $1 million on updating the former L.L. Bean call center, which is situated near the Bangor International Airport.

Members of the Bangor City approved the proposal to collect $1 million in general obligation bonds to fund improvements the call center at 689 Maine Ave. Last month, Wayfair and the city signed a lease agreement for the space, which is owned by the city.
