Maine health experts issues Chikungunya warning

Health officials in the state of Maine have issued a warning relating to a new mosquito-borne illness called, Chikungunya.

The virus is usually prevalent in the Caribbean and travellers planning to visit warmer places must be cautious about the disease. Officials said that Maine has not record any case yet but New Hampshire has already confirmed three cases.

A letter that was written by a Maine school teacher in 1931 for her mother has been delivered after 83 years later.

Miriam McMichael was 23 years old when she wrote the 9 page letter nine-page letter from Houlton, Maine to her mother, Dollena McMichael in Pittsfield, Maine. Both the women have died since then. The letter was lost and was only found at the Pittsfield post office recently.

Workers' compensation insurer, MEMIC has announced at its Annual Meeting that it has awarded $10,000 in scholarships to two Maine students.

Katie Smith of Greenbush and Kaitlyn Townsend of Livermore, both received $5,000 each for assistance in their college education. The MEMIC Harvey Picker Horizon Scholarship is awarded to the spouse or child of a worker, who has suffered serious injury or death at work. The insurer selects from several applicants for thescholarship each year. The applicants are required to show potential for academic success and demonstrate financial need.
