Maine drug overdose deaths soar 31% to 272 fatalities

A record high of 272 people died of drug overdoses in Maine in 2015, up 31 per cent from the previous year, the Attorney General’s Office stated in its newly released report.

The drug overdose-related fatalities were fueled by a near doubling of deaths from heroine. Heroine overdoses caused a total of 107 deaths, while 157 deaths were caused by some combination of heroin, fentanyl or acetyl fentanyl.

Maine State Police confirmed on Sunday that a 55-year-old registered sex offender was taken into custody in connection with the murder of a 16-year-old girl more than three and a half decades ago.

State police officials said Philip Fournier of East Millinocket was arrested last Friday after being accused in the beating death of the teenager girl Joyce McLain. Fournier, who is now 55, was 19 at the time of the alleged crime.

Maine fishermen hauled in seafood worth $616.5 million during 2015, up more than 4 per cent from the previous year’s harvest, according to data released by the state Department of Marine Resources.

The figures for the state’s last year’s seafood harvest broke all previous records in monetary terms, though the volume hit a five-year low.

Families of 3 Maine crew members settle ‘wrongful death claims’ with ship owner

The families of three Maine crew members, who lost their lives when the cargo ship El Faro sank in October last year, have finally reached a settlement with the ship’s owner, recently filed court documents revealed.

According to the documents filed in the U.S. District Court of Florida, the families of three deceased crew members agreed to settle the wrongful death claims by accepting at least $500,000 from TOTE Services, the ship’s owner.

The families of Michael Holland, Dylan Meklin and Danielle Randolph will also be paid for the economic losses they suffered due to the accident.
