Gov. LePage likes to beat up on poor people: Bernie Sanders says

With just a few days left in Maine's presidential primary, Democratic candidate Bernie Sanders addressed an energetic, youthful crowd at the State Theatre in Portland on Wednesday.

Delivering his hour-long speech, Sanders touched a number of issues and topics, including the need for a hike in minimum wage and a limit on money in politics. He also launched a harsh verbal attack on Gov. Paul LePage, alleging the governor of "beating up on poor people."

Maine Gov. Paul LePage has once again proposed a bill that would eliminate estate tax which is the assessed on a property after its owner dies and the property becomes available for inheritance.

Calling estate tax “death tax,” LePage has already made several attempts to eliminate the controversial tax but the proposals collapsed every time. A similar proposal was introduced by him as part of his biennial proposed budget in 2015 too, but the Legislature amended the bill to make the estate tax apply only to properties worth more than $5.5 million.

Two-time Olympic skating medalist Michelle Kwan stopped by Hillary Clinton’s Bangor campaign office on Tuesday to express her support for the leading Democratic presidential candidate and energize other supporters.

Kwan, who is surrogate outreach manager for the Hillary for America campaign and who served as former first lady’s senior advisor for public diplomacy & public affairs, said she was very glad to be Bangor to support Clinton.

The Maine State Housing Authority Board of Directors recently asked Gov. Paul LePage when he would release voter- approved bonds to create affordable housing for the state's senior citizens.

The proposal of issuing bonds for creating affordable housing for the seniors was approved by nearly 70 per cent of state voters.

Search for missing Maine Maritime Academy student continues

Search for the Maine Maritime Academy student who has been mission in Orono since last Friday night continued on Sunday, authorities confirmed.

Police Chief Josh Ewing said numerous police officers, game wardens and volunteers searched the Penobscot River in Bangor on Sunday for the missing student. Members of the Maine Warden Service and Down East Emergency Medicine Institute also assisted in the search. The Orono-based institute provided two Humvee teams to the effort.

Breakfast was the most essential meal of the day at the Sea Dog Brewing Company as the Incredible Breakfast Cook-Off contest brought together chefs from a total of eleven area restaurants to serve up breakfast from 7 to 9 a.m.

Maine Gov. Paul LePage on Friday formally announced his endorsement for Donald Trump, saying the GOP presidential candidate was “showing a vision” for the future.

Becoming the second Republican governor to endorse Trump in the presidential race, LePage said he did not agree with everything that Trump said, but he commended the GOP candidate’s “Make America Great Again” slogan.
