Moss collected from Portland trees found to be highly toxic

More than three hundred clumps of moss gathered by researchers from trees across Portland looked ordinary, but a profound analysis revealed that the moss contained heavily toxic metals like cadmium.

According to health experts, cadmium can cause kidney malfunction and the deadly disease of cancer. This toxic heavy metal was found particularly in moss samples collected from trees in areas around two glass factories in the city.

The Portland Fire & Rescue Bureau on Tuesday pegged the preliminary damage estimate for the recent Sundance Marina fire on Hayden Island at $24 million.

The aggressive fire that kept firefighters busy from late Sunday into Monday morning at the 300-foot-long warehouse on the Jantzen Beach destroyed as many as 350 boats. Fire crews were at the spot on Tuesday, monitoring smoldering hot spots and cleaning up the remnants of the fire.

Environmental activist Erin Brockovich and New York-based law firm Weitz & Luxemberg have come forward to help Portland residents in their fight for better air quality.

Earlier this month, the Department of Environmental Quality found that levels of hazardous metals like arsenic and cadmium in air near Bullseye Glass in SE Portland are nearly 150 times the state’s healthy benchmark. Air pollution hotspots were also found in NE Portland.

The Portland Association of Teachers on Thursday formally endorsed Jules Bailey, a Multnomah County commissioner and an ex-state legislator, in the race for the city’s next mayor.

Announcing endorsement for the Bailey the teachers union’s president, Gwen Sullivan, said in written statement that the union decided to support Bailey because he was the perfect candidate for working families in Portland.

Portland girl dies after being suffocated by birthday balloon

An 8-year-old girl was found dead on her bed earlier this week at her home in Northeast Portland; and a balloon is being blamed for the young girl's ill-timed death.

The girl's parents told police that the girl had gone to bed at around 9 p. m. Wednesday night and when they checked on her twenty minutes later, she was not found unresponsive. She was not breathing.

The victim's grandmother, Pat McGlothlon, said she was home when the incident occurred. The girl was found unresponsive in the bed by her father. He found a mylar balloon on her head.
