The Obama Administration has come up with a new way to fight the alarmingly high drug overdose cases in America. The administration in its latest effort will relax the rules for doctors who are allowed to prescribe a powerful anti-opioid medication.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration has finalized the new rule under which the number of patients being treated by doctors who could prescribe buprenorphine has been increased. The medication is meant to treat opioid use disorder.

Secretary of Health and Human Services Sylvia M. Burwell said that the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration has finalized a new rule on Tuesday, increasing the number of patients that can be treated with buprenorphine, a medication used for the treatment of opioid use disorder, quite like methadone.

This rule alteration has added to the opioid initiative being launched in last March by HHS. The focus of the initiative was on three priorities, including increased access to medication-assisted treatment for opioid use disorder.
