Record Numbers of Turtle Nests Reported in South Carolina and Florida

Southeast is having a very good season of loggerhead sea turtle nesting. Record number of turtle nests has been seen in regions along coasts of Florida and South Carolina. The numbers also suggest that oceanic turtle will have a good season this year.

A report has been released by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources which shows that South Carolina alone has more than 4,900 nests. These are just preliminary figures and the count may increase in coming days, as per the report.

Algae bloom issue has increased to an alarming level in Florida’s southern beaches and rivers. Seeing the condition, Gov. Rick Scott announced on Wednesday that more funding would be dedicated to treat the problem.

Scott said that he would ask the Florida Legislature to set aside a grant that would only be used to help homeowners who would move from septic tanks to central sewer systems. He has even promised to keep aside funds in 2017 to help communities around the Indian River Lagoon and Caloosahatchee River build new wastewater systems.

On Monday, the state wildlife and conservation commission said that a Florida man has been charged with taking more than 100 loggerhead sea turtle eggs when the turtle was laying them on a beach.

In a statement, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said that on Friday, 49-year-old Glenn Shaw of Tequesta was arrested at nearly 10:30 pm after police spotted him taking eggs from the turtle on Jupiter Island, located on the state's Atlantic Ocean coast, nearly 100 miles north of Miami.

Last week, Florida Gov. Rick Scott announced a state of emergency in counties located on the Atlantic coast of the state due to the expansive algae blooms in the St. Lucie River. Following Scott's executive order in Martin and St. Lucie counties, state agencies were made to take action to deal with the thick toxic blooms spoiling the ecology of the river, destroying water-related businesses and could cause health issues for the ones in contact with the water.
