Maine man rescues woman and her 2 kids from sinking car

A Maine man fishing at a remote pond in Hancock County acted fast and successfully rescued a woman as well as her two children from a sinking car.

Leonard Wallace and his wife, Rosemary, of Steuben went to the Fox Pond to catch trout last Saturday afternoon. They were there just for around 15 minutes, when they heard screams for help. When Wallace turned to his right, he saw a car falling into the pond.

Maine teacher who won $1M award accused of shoplifting

A teacher from Edgecomb, who was awarded a million dollar prize last year, has been charged with shoplifting, a spokesperson for the Damariscotta Police Department has confirmed.

According to Damariscotta police, Nancie Atwell was issued a summon last week on a charge of shoplifting by unauthorized taking. The female educator is accused of pinching a blouse from Reny’s store in Damariscotta on March 28, 2016.

Group recommends Maine to create new agency to regulate motorized farm attractio

Maine currently lacks the ability to regulate motorized farm attractions and it would have to form a new agency to do so, a safety task force created in response to a 2014 fatal hayride accident said.

The Hayride Safety Stakeholders Group examined existing system and found that the Maine State Police and the state Fire Marshal’s Office don’t have the manpower and resources required to regulate motorized farm attractions.

2 Auburn boys died after being hit by vehicle: CHP

Two juveniles lost their lives after a vehicle hit them in Auburn on Sunday, a spokesperson for the California Highway Patrol (CHP) confirmed.

Officer David Martinez from the CHP Auburn office said the deadly crash occurred near Grass Valley Highway and Shale Ridge Lane at around 5:15 p.m. yesterday.

Three boys were walking southbound on the northbound side of Highway 49 in the city Sunday evening when they hit by a pickup truck. One lane was temporarily closed on the southbound highway.

Maine senators deal potentially fatal blow to ‘resort casino bill’

Maine senators on Monday dealt a potentially fatal blow to resort casino bill that proposed to build a resort-style casino in the southern part of the state.

The controversial bill fell two votes short, as senators voted 16-18 to disapprove the bill. Then, the senators voted to concur with the Maine House of Representatives that last week voted 83-61 to defeat the bill.

Taken together, the voting by the Senate and the House of Representatives, indicate that the measure will not be able to make it through the state Legislature this year.
