Previous year, Bangor Police Chief Thomas O’Donohue had to shut down as many as fifteen notoriously disorderly houses and eject the proprietors from the city.

The Portland Association of Teachers on Thursday formally endorsed Jules Bailey, a Multnomah County commissioner and an ex-state legislator, in the race for the city’s next mayor.

Announcing endorsement for the Bailey the teachers union’s president, Gwen Sullivan, said in written statement that the union decided to support Bailey because he was the perfect candidate for working families in Portland.

Navy launches investigation into who flew drone over Bangor submarine base

A spokesperson for the U. S. Navy has confirmed that earlier this month's incident of a drone flying in prohibited airspace over Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor is under investigation.

The drone was spotted over the prohibited Bangor submarine vase by a Navy employee on Feb. 8, 2016. Confirming the incident in a written statement, Navy spokesperson Silvia Klatman said the investigation was launched in coordination with civilian law enforcement.

Portland girl dies after being suffocated by birthday balloon

An 8-year-old girl was found dead on her bed earlier this week at her home in Northeast Portland; and a balloon is being blamed for the young girl's ill-timed death.

The girl's parents told police that the girl had gone to bed at around 9 p. m. Wednesday night and when they checked on her twenty minutes later, she was not found unresponsive. She was not breathing.

The victim's grandmother, Pat McGlothlon, said she was home when the incident occurred. The girl was found unresponsive in the bed by her father. He found a mylar balloon on her head.

Fire damages grocery store in Auburn

A fire broke out at a grocery store in the Lakeland Hills area of Auburn Thursday evening, causing significant damages, authorities confirmed.

The fire at the Haggen Foods, which is located in the 1400 block of Lake Tapps Parkway SE, was first reported at around 5:52 p.m., within minutes of the blaze’s emergence. Valley Regional Fire crews were rushed to the scene, where they ordered evacuation of the building.

Fire officials could not say what exactly caused the fire, but they said they believed the fire started in the grocery store’s deli area.

Man confesses to starting Portland church, house fires

A 46-year-old man came forward to police and confessed that he set two properties at fire in Portland in the early hours of Sunday morning, authorities announced.

Jaime Calderon admitted that he started fire at the Eastside Free Methodist Church in Southeast Portland as well as another blaze in a vacant house across the street in the same area.

Maine’s Gun Background Check Initiative qualifies for Nov. ballot

An initiative by Maine residents that aims to expand criminal background checks to all gun sales in the state has qualified for the November ballot, Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap confirmed.

The Maine Background Check Initiative garnered nearly 85,000 signatures, but only 66,000 of those signatures were validated by Dunlap’s office. The initiative required at least 61,123 votes to get a place on the ballot for next general election.
