Massachusetts’ new renewable energy standards have created tougher challenges for Maine’s logging industry, which is already facing problems due to the disintegration of the biomass market and closure of pulp & paper mills.

Joanne Twomey, a former mayor for Biddeford, has been certified by the Secretary of Maine State to run in the Democratic primary for the Senate District 32 seat. The primary is scheduled to take place on June 14, 2016.

The proposed change that would move Maine back to a statewide presidential primary vote would cost the state's taxpayers more than $1 million, according to Secretary of State Matt Dunlap's estimate.

The Secretary of State's Office recently said that a rough estimate suggested that the taking the state back to a presidential primary vote would cost taxpayers in the range of $1 million to more than $2 million, depending on the time of the election.
