World’s Population could hit 12 billion by 2100

A novel report based on statistics from the United Nations unveiled that earth's population could reach 12 billion by 2100. Current population of the planet stands at 7.2 billion.

The increasing population would aggravate problems including diseases, food shortage and poverty. As per the report published in the journal Science, the global population can reach between 9.6 and 12.3 billion by 2100.

Gigantic Black Hole found in Miniscule Galaxy, M60-UCD1

Astronomers have found one of the smallest galaxies ever known to man, M60-UCD1. NASA stated that with the help of the Hubble Space Telescope, astronomers have discovered a supermassive black hole in this miniscule galaxy.

Giant size of the black hole has surprised astronomers. It is so big that it accounts for 15% of the galaxy's total mass. If comparative analysis is done with the Milky Way's black hole then it accounts for just .01% of the complete galaxy mass.

Meteorite that hit Mexico’s Yucatán peninsula helped biodiversity: Study

A meteorite that had hit Mexico’s Yucatán peninsula 66 million years ago is believed to have ended dinosaur species on the planet. A research team from University of Arizona said that it may have also been responsible for the biodiversity seen around the globe today.

Researchers from the University of Arizona say that the huge meteorite had also destroyed evergreen forests that covered the earth. It also led fast-growing deciduous trees that lose their leaves at some point during the year to better adapt to the volatile post-apocalyptic environment.

Chimp-on-Chimp Violence is Natural

Chimp-on-Chimp Violence is Natural

A detailed study carried out by different research teams, has claimed that killing among chimpanzees results from normal competition and not because of human involvement. Chimpanzees are the only primates known to team up on their friends to lead lethal battles.

More than 30 scientists have co-written the international study and collected the data from about 426 joint years of observation, across 18 different chimp communities.

Modern Europeans Descended from Three Groups in Last 7,000 Years

After analyzing the genomes from nine ancient Europeans, researchers have come to know that the present modern European gene pool developed from three ancient populations that passed through Europe over 7,000 years ago.

Blue-eyed and dark-skinned hunters mixed with brown-eyed, pale skinned farmers who entered Europe from the North East. Population having Siberian similarities had also played an important role in the genetic landscape of Europe.

Natural Ability to Kill is a Common Trait among Humans and Chimpanzees

Natural Ability to Kill is a Common Trait among Humans and Chimpanzees

It was previously believed that the ability of killing is only possessed by human beings, but a new study has showed that chimpanzees also share the ability of killing, showing aggression, maiming and creating an in-group and an out-group. Published in the journal Nature on Wednesday, the study looked into why chimpanzees commit acts of violence against each other.

Meteorite Hit Majorly Impacted Flowering Plants than Deciduous Plants: Study

Meteorite Hit Majorly Impacted Flowering Plants than Deciduous Plants: Study

In a recent study, scientists have revealed that the giant meteorite, which is believed to be the main cause behind extinction of dinosaurs almost 66 million years ago, might be the reason for the growth of deciduous plants on earth.

According to a team of researchers from the University of Arizona, the meteorite hit had a greater impact on the flowering plants. When flowering plants suffered a major setback on the planet, it acted as an opportunity for deciduous plants to flourish. Deciduous plants are those plants, which shed their leaves at one point during a year.
